Frustration

Technology is suppose to make life easier, but today I’m frustrated. I’ve tried to use my video clips in a class project, but along they way I am doing something wrong and I can not find out what that is. I listened and watched the tutorials, but still I encounters some problems. So I’m giving up for the moment and hope there is somebody that will have some useful advice for me.

Just another thought – I wonder how many ladies run out with the garbage on garbage morning still dressed in their PJ’s? I think our garbage guy have noticed I had new PJ’s on this morning because he see me so often running out in the morning. Ha, ha. I just had a good laugh at myself today. Maybe I should put some kind of reminder on my computer for garbage day. I just can’t remember it.

The “left behinders”

Alec has put a blog out to find some views on1) Is the Internet a democratizing agent?
2) How does/can technology be an tool for prosocial change?

He need this because he need to speak to a group of students on “Social Justice and Globalization from an Educational Perspective.”

This is a very interesting topic. If he ever talk about it publicly I would love to attend.

It open up my thoughts a little more to the people that don’t have  access or restricted and controlled access to the internet.
Does that mean they are “left behind”? I think you only miss something if you know what there is to miss.
As we grew up in an environment of broadening your knowledge we need ways of doing it. And the internet is there for us and there is really no boundaries to it except the time that you have available. You can tap from other people’s knowledge and grow further in knowledge. We don’t sit down in groups any more and talk and argue about issues any more. We sit down in front of the computer and state our point. We have time to really think what we want to say and even leave it in a draft till the next day to really make sure what we would like to say. This is still only available for a limited group of people in the world. Do we think of our self as superior and that the way we do things is the only way and we need to “help” other people to be the same as us?

The rest of the people are the “left behinders” , but I really don’t want to see it that way. It depends on what is expected of them – their family, the goverment, self. Is it to make sure there is enough food on the table and water in the bucket to drink from and a save house to live in or Is it expected from them to further their education?

The question that I would like to put out is if it is really important for all the people to have access to the internet or is it sometimes just better to leave things the way they are? Try to think a little further as Canada and being a first world country. Think how it would be if you lived in a developing country.

Not grades but LEARNING

I found this very interesting blog on The Fischbowl (Parent Teacher Conferences-Reflection). It talks about parent teacher interviews and how parents are only interested in what their kids can do to get better marks and grades. One teacher decided to move away from this “traditional” interview style and focus on the learning experience in the class. She asked her students to write an assessment on their learning through the semester and also share it with their parents. This was great. They have definitely have an excellent learning experience and each child has found her/his class fun, positive and rewarding.  It is blog I encourage you to read.

I personally find this very positive and something for all of us to try. It is so important for students to focus on the learning precess in school. Does your grade really reflect how much you have learned? Do we have to learn information that is just a click away on the internet? Information change as time moves on, so did we waist valuable time trying to memorize? Helping kids to know how to learn, what is important about learning and how you challenge yourself by assessing yourself all the time is very important in my eyes.

I challenge my fellow students to not get caught in the ordinary but go and change the system. Somebody needs to start the process and now is the time!!

Saving time

Tomorrow is council meeting at the school and I just saved myself so much time by using “Google Docs”

This way I can send it to the school where they can print it and prepare it for the meeting

Being the treasurer I’m constantly working with lists, names, phone numbers and $amounts. By saving it in my google account I can have it ready when ever I am at the school and don’t have to carry all my files and documents with me.

Thank you ECMP and thank you Google

Ringette

I am so excited. After my daughter started to play ringette I had this desire to play myself as well. But I never learned to skate, so obviously you can not play ringette. Well, I decided to get to work on this. After buying skates last year I learned myself to at least move forward without crashing down all the time. So last night I did it. I joined a ringette team. I am still the slowest girl on the team and fell down a few times, but it was FUN.

How will I use this Blog?

I was wondering how I can use this blog as I am only taking isolated classes and not following a specific course. One idea is to take my family and use them as a project. If anybody has some other ideas, please feel free to let me know.
